Beauty Abroad: What I Packed for Amsterdam
A couple of weeks ago, my boyfriend and I took a 5 day trip to the beautiful city of Amsterdam. It was my first time going abroad without my parents so naturally I was stressing about accommodation, making it to the flight on time, managing my spending money but most importantly -which products was I going to take and how was I going to fit it all into my bag?!
If you’ve ever travelled hand-luggage only then I’m sure you’re familiar with those annoying little plastic bags they give you that are supposed to fit all your toiletries inside, and if you’re anything like me you’ve probably looked at said bag and thought “You’re having a laugh mate.” There is no way, I thought, that I’m fitting all this MAC, in that tiny bag. However it turns out, you really can travel light without leaving behind all your favourite products. Here’s what I packed:
I tried to keep face products to a minimum as there’s so much to see in Amsterdam I knew I wouldn’t have much time to get ready each morning. I packed MAC Studio Fix Fluid in NC43.5 along with my Dream Flawless Nude by Maybelline in shade 48 Sun Beige. I like to mix these two together as they both give great coverage however the studio fix is a little dark for me and so mixing the two helps to make it a few shades lighter plus the formula isn’t so heavy. I also took a tiny pot of Prep + Prime by MAC that I received as a sample last time I went in. As far as primers go it’s pretty standard however the creamy consistency did feel a little heavy on my face when I first applied it.
I also packed YSL Touche Èclat 2.5, which is one of my can’t-live-without-it products. I love the fact that you push the button for more product on the brush and it blends so flawlessly wherever you choose to apply it. I like to use this under the eye to brighten up darker areas as well as along the cheekbones for a subtle but glowy highlight.
I knew we were going to be taking lots of photos so I made sure I packed Stay Matte Pressed Powder by Rimmel to make sure my face didn’t start to look shiny -nobody wants to look greasy in a selfie. I’m not a huge blush fan but Raizin by MAC is one of my favourites. It’s a really earthy red/brown that doubles as a blush/contour powder which meant I only had to take one cheek product rather than two!
For eyes I kept it pretty simple, packing my Maybelline gel liner with brush and a mini travel size tube of They’re Real by Benefit. Probably my favourite mascara of all time and this tube was just the right size to take on holiday.
I packed two lipsticks, one for day and one for night. Mehr by MAC -a soft, pinky nude for the daytime and All Fired Up by MAC just in case we went somewhere dressy and I needed a pop of colour. Both are matte finishes however I often put a little lip balm over any matte lippy because I don’t like my lips to feel dry.
I also packed an eye cream as I expected we would be having late nights/early mornings and puffy eyes are a no go when you’re trying to have a romantic getaway. I love this Bright Eyes Eye Cream by Good Things, it really helps to de-puff and brighten up your under eye area. Just like all the products I’ve tried by Good Things, it smells amazing too.
I would absolutely recommend Amsterdam as a place to go for a city break. It was probably one of the coolest places I’ve ever visited and I can’t wait to go again! Let me know if you’ve ever been there, and what are your beauty travel essentials?
